Society, teaching, and dispostion

Earlier i spoke about how i think that diversity should be implemented in classroom. However, I have no always thought this way. As an education major we are forced to take certain classes that not all of us look forward to. Last semester I was forced to take a class called Society, Teaching, and Disposition. I walked in the first day not know what the hell to expect. I mean I could not even tell you what the word disposition meant before this class. At first it was one of those classes that I was being forced to take a did not look forward to, but as the semester went on I feel like it taught me more than any other class I have ever taken at Kutztown. This class taught us about people from all sorts of backgrounds. Basically it gave me a new way of seeing things. I never realized how "closed minded" I was until I took this class as was forced to reflect on certain situations we were learning about. It took me until college to have my thinking reconstructed and to finally accept certain people. So i guess what I am trying to say is I think diversity was brought to my attention far too late in life. I went through life potentially missing out on meeting some pretty awesome people because I was being narrow minded. I'll be the first to admit I was pretty closed minded growing up. And it was not by choice I was just never exposed to certain diverse situations. I do not think the future of america should be raised this way. Diversity needs to be implemented classrooms...and I think it should start young. Little kids are like sponges they are constantly willing to learn...so why not take the opportunity to teach it?!

Why diversity is important...

I believe that diversity is a life skill that is most times over looked in the classroom. Oh too often teachers do not take the time to teach about different cultures, religions, and ethnicities inside the classroom. Not teaching our children about diversity only leads to people being closed minded. If children are given the opportunity to learn about other lifestyles they will realize that there is more to life than just the life they live. Teaching diversity in the classroom can also give children the opportunity to teach the class about themselves and let us hear their story. Bringing diversity into the classroom will equip our children with a better appreciation of different cultures. It will also help them to understand the amount of unnecessary hostility that minority groups have been faced with. Teaching kids about children with special needs will help them to be more accepting and help those with special needs feel more comfortable in the classroom. What are some ways that you think diversity can be implemented in the classroom?
